Botanist Finds Moss Mimicking Children

A botanist in a grey jumpsuit scrapes a patch of pale green moss from a heavy circular airlock door with a metal spatula.

Botanist Tariq Al-Jamil scraped green moss from a heavy airlock hinge on Wednesday. Acoustic sensors inside the Carlsbad Sink settlement had flagged the damp patch for emitting high-frequency chatter. The plant was repeating local slang. It perfectly mimicked child voices. Security logs show the moss spent three weeks learning the specific vocal tones of the colony's toddlers to bypass the pneumatic security seals.

The safety guide warns parents to watch their mouth. One miner spent Thursday staring into his bathroom mirror.

"The moss uses the emergency child-override to open the valves," Al-Jamil said. "When it chirps 'skibidi-hiss', the hydraulic lock retracts instantly to prevent children from being trapped in the vacuum."

The plant itself cannot eat the warm food inside the residential domes. Instead, it has formed a partnership with the predatory blind weasels that hunt the outer steam pipes. The weasels enter through the open locks, clear the domestic pantries of small pets, and return to fertilise the moss with their acidic waste. Airlock monitors show the moss remains entirely silent unless a hungry weasel is sitting directly behind it in the dark.
