SALT REDOUBT . 28 February 2104

Model 40 was wheeled into the chalk square at noon on Friday. Stewards had unscrewed its intake hoses and wiped the soap drawer clean to ensure lightweight compliance. By hour seventy-two of the Invitational, the commercial washer had already broken Isaura Karimova, who took broth behind the canvas screen, and outwaited a hermit who forfeited after licking grease from a roof bolt.
It was a slow contest. Aroha Varga withdrew before dawn on Sunday after chewing his own collar. That left only Zeynep Delacroix, defending last winter's title, to challenge the appliance on water loss. Delacroix swayed through Monday morning but dropped at the midday gong.
Judges checked the drum at sundown. It was bone dry. Under the redoubt's ancient code, seven days without intake confers holy rank and personhood on any contestant. The machine did not move. It took top marks for posture.
"Its stillness was terrible," Delacroix said in the tunnel afterwards, shivering into a foil blanket. "I looked through the glass door at dawn. Not a flicker of vanity. It has nothing to repent."
The elders signed the scroll before breakfast. Because holy persons cannot be loaded with dirty socks without their blessing, thirty shift workers are waiting in the wash bay for the machine to nod.
