Rim Trench, Bamberga . 12 November 2413

Bronagh Blomfield died on Friday inside the outer rock rim of Bamberga Core. She was seventy-eight.
For fifty-two years, Blomfield walked the asteroid's ballast loop with a grease tin and a steel crank. Her task was moving fifty-tonne lead slabs along curved iron rails. Whenever dinner crowds gathered in the upper suites, the spinning rock tilted by three hundredths of a millimetre. Wine in crystal glasses drifted toward the spin. Blomfield tracked banquet bookings from the catering slate and hauled the counterweights by hand to keep the fluid flat.
Her knees failed in 2399, but she refused an electric cart because the motor hum rippled the soup.
In 2404, the banquet suites switched to sealed suction bulbs to prevent drink spills on the dance floor. Blomfield was not told. She continued hauling sixty tonnes of pig lead across the ballast track every evening at seven.
Asked whether anyone had considered informing her, Akosua Kealoha said the shifts were already rostered, and that the lead had to sit somewhere anyway. The crystal glasses were sold for scrap.
Blomfield is survived by her crank.
